A Captain Planet movie unfolds and Leo DiCaprio produces it

Just because Leonardo DiCaprio is behind the new one Captain Planet movie doesn’t mean it’ll be any less cheesy than it looks. The Oscar winner partnered with Paramount Pictures to bring the popular, environmentally conscious 1990s superhero to the big screen. Appian Way Productions by Leonardo DiCaprio will address this story about reducing pollution while uniting the nations of the planet to make Earth a better place to live.

The film will be based on the 1990s cartoon series of the same name. Paramount targets Jono Matt and Scream Queens star Glen Powell to write screenplay, says Hollywood journalist. When a deal is struck with the two writers, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and DiCaprio will move forward with their deal to produce the film via Appian Way. The company signed a first deal with the studio in March alongside Glen Powell.

At this time, it’s unclear whether Glen Powell or Leonardo DiCaprio themselves will appear in the film. Powell is best known for his acting work in the FX series Scream Queens, and he was one of the stars of Richard Linklater’s comedy Everybody Wants Some. At the moment, it is unclear who will take on the title role of Captain Planet.

Captain Planet and The Planeteers debuted in syndication in September 1990 and aired until December 1992. The story followed five teenagers from around the world. Each received a magic ring that could control the natural elements. When assembled, this team of UN teenagers could convene Captain Planet, which helped the team tackle various environmental threats and ailments.

Sony Pictures was previously trying to get a Captain Planet the film took off, but the studio let the rights expire. Paramount and Appian Way jumped at the chance to reclaim the rights once they saw what Jono Matt and Glen Powell had planned for the potential franchise.

Sources close to the project say the story takes place several years after the show ended. Captain Planet is no longer the superhero he was, but rather a washed-up. And now he needs his team of kids more than they’ve ever needed him. Leonardo DiCaprio turned to the project because it fits his environmental activism and speaks out on issues close to his heart such as global warming.

Glen Powell will next be seen in the war drama Sand Castle. He is also featured in the Fox drama Hidden Figures which delves into a secret NASA mission. Jono Matt wrote an action-adventure reboot of Doctor Dolittle and recently wrote the indie drama Above the Line. No release date or start date of production has been announced for Captain Planet right now.
